‘Empire’ season 2 spoilers: Oprah Winfrey, Common both appearing
We knew that “Empire” executive producer Lee Daniels was in the process of courting Oprah Winfrey to appear on his show, and clearly, this is a man who gets what he wants.
Speaking to “Access Hollywood,” Daniels confirmed that Oprah has indeed signed up to play at least a small part in the second season, which will air on Fox during the 2015-16 season. (No precise timetable has been given just yet.) Not only that, but Common is also coming on board fresh off of his “Selma” Oscar win! He was recently a regular on “Hell on Wheels” before departing this past season. No specific role was given for either one of them, but we personally hope that they are playing someone other than themselves.
“Empire” has the real opportunity at this point to go after and potentially even get almost any and all guest stars it wants. This is really the luxury that comes along with drawing the biggest ratings we’ve seen for a drama series in years. “Glee” was the last hour-long show to draw ratings anywhere near a 6.0 rating (think back to the Britney Spears episode), and the last pure drama to do so was “Grey’s Anatomy” more than five years ago.
Next week, “Empire” will conclude its first season with two back-to-back episodes, and we will find out if Lucious and Jamal will ever be able to strike some sort of peace. Of course, Cookie has also figured out a plan of her own, and you have to believe that she will do anything possible to execute it to the fullest.
