Could ‘Game of Thrones’ exist longer than seven seasons? HBO wants it to

Game of Thrones -Should there be one season of “Game of Thrones” for every George R.R. Martin book? For the longest time, this has been our assumption for the most part. The show has kept roughly this pace already, though there are some books that have been represented in more than a single season of the show.

However, it may be time to start to have an honest discussion about whether or not this is really going to happen. Speaking per Entertainment Weekly, HBO Programming head Michael Lombardo makes it very clear that, at least for him, he would certainly like to see the show last a little longer than seven seasons:

“We’ll have an honest conversation that explores all possible avenues … If they weren’t comfortable going beyond seven seasons, I trust them implicitly and trust that’s the right decision—as horrifying as that is to me. What I’m not going to do is have a show continue past where the creators believe where they feel they’ve finished with the story.”

What also is interesting about this story is that Lomardo has a very specific concern about ending “Game of Thrones” with a feature film, which was suggested by Martin and others: It would hurt potentially those HBO subscribers who already pay a premium for the network. Why would you then force them to go and spend another $10-15 in order to watch a movie on a big screen somewhere? It is a good point, and personally, we don’t love format-jumping very much unless it is something done after the fact. We don’t even love it that much, either; sorry, “Entourage.”

We would rather see “Game of Thrones” end with maybe an extended seventh season or something like that, if there is enough content for it. We don’t want to see the series necessarily end anytime soon, but we’re also aware that there can be too much of a good thing.
