‘Bates Motel’ season 3, episode 1 review: Norma and Norman get creepy
It has been a while since we’ve had new episode of “Bates Motel” and with the way the show left us dangling, it’s been a very long wait for it’s return! Norman is up to his eyeballs in trouble and Norma knows it – the question is now, what are they going to do about it?
This season started off just as creepy as ever as Norman wakes up in bed with his mother, rolls over and spoons her. Dylan sees it and calls it out as strange, saying that an 18 year old son sleeping in bed with his mom isn’t right. The next time Norman tries to cuddle up with his mom in bed, Norma decides to send him back to his own bed saying it’s not good for him and he’s upset.
Norma learns that her mother is dead when a lawyer calls her to talk about the estate, but Norma tells him that she doesn’t want anything to do with it. The pain of her mother dying ends up getting the better of her and she asks Norman to come to bed with her again.
Now that Norman knows the truth about his blackouts he is having a very difficult time dealing with the death of Ms Watson. He is having delusions and he tells his mom that it’s happening at school. She decides to home-school Norman and makes him hotel manager so that she can go back to school herself. Norman convinces Emma that she should also be home-schooled, that they can do it together, but more then that he tells her that he wants to date her.
Dylan wants out of the drug business (sort of) and is hoping to have a little farm where he grows a few plants and helps people with medical needs. He wants it to all be above the board with a license and everything, but Romero tells him that he’s on his own if he does that. The story with Dylan’s father isn’t over either. He is getting some cash from his mother’s death and wanted to give it to Dylan, but he tells his father to get in the car and leave.
We finally had Norman’s first creepy moment at the hotel that we know later in his story becomes a staple for him: Watching women at the motel shower. Norma catches him and tells him that what he’s doing isn’t normal and he promises it won’t happen again. He learns that this woman is a working girl and offers to ride with her in her Porsche into town to show her where the local bar is…. only he ends up driving her car back to the hotel and she’s not in it. Do we have another murder on our hands?
They have set a few storylines up that we think could be interesting like how much closer Norma and Norman are getting and him being home-schooled, but we’d like to see Dylan have more to do then deal with his father since we dove into that a lot last season. Episode grade: B+
