Fox, Sylvester Stallone making ‘The Expendables’ event series

Fox -Well, file this one under “news we never imagined would be happening.”

According to a new report coming in from Deadline, Fox is working with Sylvester Stallone on an event-series version of “The Expendables,” the movie series that featured popular action stars more or less doing precisely what they are known for. There’s no word yet on if Stallone will also act in the series in addition to being an executive producer. This comes on the heels of Fox at least having some relative success this past summer with “24: Live Another Day.”

Now, we pose the following question: Is this actually a good idea? The third installment of the film series was more or less a box-office bomb, and there is not really a reason to think that a TV version will be that much different … with one caveat. It’s very different to ask someone to pay anywhere between $8-$15 plus refreshments to take time out of their day to go sit in a theater, compared to being able to watch or DVR something from home for free. There may be plenty of people who would want to watch this, but just not pay big bucks in order to see it.

We ultimately feel like this will sink or swim depending on the cast. They need significant names who people will want to see, and there has to also be enough comedy to balance out all of the action sequences. There have been times during the movies (especially the second one) where we were almost completely bored by some of the loud noise and nothing else.
