‘Downton Abbey’ season 6 spoilers: More evidence towards final season mounts
While neither “Downton Abbey” creator Julian Fellowes nor any of the cast have necessarily confirmed that the final season of the ITV series have spoken out and said that the upcoming sixth season will indeed be the last, more and more evidence is starting to come out … and it appears as though it most likely will be.
Want some other insight into that? According to a new report from TVLine, the majority of the actors are considering moving on after the upcoming season, which also happens to be when their current contracts expire. This all furthers along the theories that we are nearing the end of the road for what was and is still somewhat of a sensation. We’ve already heard Maggie Smith say that she does not see the show lasting much longer, and many other actors could join her. Some of the other leads have been getting new representation in America over the past year or so, which gives us the impression that they may be looking to try more work elsewhere.
This could all ultimately be a case of the stars aligning at the right time for most of these actors, given that we really don’t think that the series really even should be continuing beyond the sixth season to begin with. You already have a great thing, and you don’t want to overstay your welcome. Also, the idea of this show without Maggie is somewhat terrifying, and we feel like you could probably convince her to do one more season before calling it a day.
Filming for season 6 will take place in the months ahead in the United Kingdom. It will premiere this fall on ITV, and then in January on PBS pending some sort of last-minute change.
