‘How to Get Away with Murder’ finale spoilers: Boss on twist ending, season 2 continuation
If you’ve watched ABC with any regularity at all over the past week, you have most likely seen promos for “How to Get Away with Murder” that lay out one simple reminder: You cannot miss the final minute of the show. There will be a huge twist ending that changes the game, and also sets the stage for what will be a crazy series of events in the almost sure-to-come second season. ABC hasn’t technically announced the renewal, but we all know it’s happening.
This is basically spelled out even further by executive producer Peter Nowalk, who tells TV Guide something that we find very interesting: the idea for the final scene changed many times, and is different than what his first pitch was to ABC:
“We kept changing the last scene of the finale, so I think it definitely changed from when I first pitched the show in the best way. I think it’s better … It was very hard to write. In fact, I wrote several versions and the writers and I went back and forth with other things that could happen, even to the point that the script the actors got at the table read was different from the one the night before. Most importantly, I’m very happy with the ending. I think it’s exciting and I hope people like it. … I think there are definitely some questions. I wouldn’t say just one. There are many questions that arise in the finale that we will have to answer in Season 2.”
Let us just say right now that we’re more than thrilled with the idea of Nowalk and the writers doing this. You want to have a plan in showrunning, but you also want to have flexibility to deviate here and there. It makes it so much easier to come up with ideas that work organically with the progression of your show, now that you are seeing what audiences respond to.
