Is ABC’s ‘Scandal’ season 4, episode 14 new tonight on ABC?

ABC has developed a trend over the past year and a half when it comes to all things Shonda Rhimes: New episodes are presented in bunches, and there are very little breaks in between. Unfortunately for all Gladiators, there is a little break you must prepare for when it comes to “Scandal“: There’s no new episode tonight.

What’s the reason for that? It is as simple as a double-dose of “How to Get Away with Murder,” which ABC is ending, since 15 episodes is the maximum that was seemingly worked in so Viola Davis can continue to pursue other gigs in addition to this show. This series is ending in a way that enables the network to launch something new in this timeslot (“American Crime”), and it will therefore have a chance to find an audience and succeed. As for whether or not it actually will, that remains to be seen. This delay for “Scandal” also means that it is no longer ahead of “Grey’s Anatomy” by an episode, which is nice for those of you who are OCD and care about such things.

So what can you expect when Kerry Washington and company do return to ABC? Think along the lines of a powerful, emotionally-gripping episode that feels somewhat ripped from the headlines. While part of the focus will be on Olivia Pope’s return, there will also be a story that is very similar to what happened in Ferguson, and invoke similar questions. Expect an episode that is in many ways different from the rest of the season.
