‘NCIS’ season 12, episode 17 preview: Michael Weatherly, Robert Wagner team up again
You may have heard in some other reports that Robert Wagner is poised to reprise his role as Anthony DiNozzo Sr. on an upcoming episode of “NCIS.” Just in case you have not heard such reports, you’re at least hearing them right now! The elder Tony will be returning to the series for its next new episode airing on March 10, and this one is entitled “The Artful Dodger.”
Just in case you were wondering why he is turning up, the synopsis below makes it clear that he has some insight into the world of art, which will be helpful for both the younger Tony (Michael Weatherly) and the rest of the team:
“Evidence in an NCIS murder case reveals a rare painting on loan had been swapped for a fake, prompting DiNozzo, Sr. to share his knowledge and contacts of the black market art world with the team.”
For those of you who are bummed out about there being no new episode of the show anytime soon, just remember here that this is hardly something that is new for the show. It always tends to air new episodes throughout February, and then take a week or two off in March. This is just the natural ebb and flow of the TV season, but given that there are still eight episodes left this season, hopefully there will be some other great things to come.
We’ll have further news as it comes up, so stay tuned!

Looking forward to an update on the DiNozzos father and son relationship. Last time Senior was here, he and Tony were on good terms and he was getting married. Is that still happening? Will we meet Tony’s soon to be step mother soon? I enjoyed his episode last season when Robert Wagner appeared for the 250th, so I’m excited for this one.

I guess McGee will be chosen to go undercover with Senior since when ever Senior blows into town Gibbs kicks Tony off the case and questions his professionalism. Tony of course is the only one who is treated in this manner when a family member is involved. But it fits right in with this season’s agenda to promote McGee as GIbbs most competent and essential agent. I’ll be quite shocked if the writers allow Tony to show any competence at all considering the season 12 McGibbs agenda and this episodes writer.

The pictures indicate that McGee will be going on assignment with Senior. Well McGee IS the new Tony.

Great, another “let’s bring Senior in to work a case” episode, written by a writer (Gina Monreal) who seems to hate Tony and who seems to relish any opportunity to make him look stupid.
I can see it now – Senior will sweep in and take over, throwing cutting quips at Tony and treating him like his servant. Everyone will fawn over him and be upset at Tony not recognising how absolutely wonderful Senior is and how he can do no wrong, and Tony will once again be relegated to playing, as Michael Weatherly once said, “the idiot child in the corner”.
I have very low expectations for this episode, so maybe I’ll be pleasantly surprised. I love Robert Wagner as an actor, and loved his first appearance as Senior, but I’m getting to the point that I can’t stand when he shows up every season.

Sadly, you have most likely nailed the gist of this episode. Heaven forbid we get an episode where the entire team treats Tony with respect or Gibbs makes it clear that Tony is a valued agent. Heaven forbid we actually see Tony handle any danger. Without a doubt if there is any scene which is exciting, suspenseful, or dangerous, Tony won’t be in it. Those are Gibbs only scenes these days, that is unless McGee or some guest star accompanies super Gibbs. Wonder if tptb intentionally chose Gina Monreal to write this one since they obviously have no interest in seeing Tony written in a flattering way and she always accomodates. He got his once a season flattery moment in Cadence. Now it’s back to super Gibbs/insignificant Tony all the time.
