‘House of Lies’ season 4, episode 6 review: Marty and Roscoe’s bonding moment
Through most of “House of Lies” this season, we’ve come to loathe the storyline with Marty Kaan and Roscoe. It feels like he had been pigeonholed into the “angry teenage kid” stereotype, which included him rebelling, not listening, and just being a terrible person. Sure, he had reasons to, including his father going away to prison. We just were not seeing a whole lot in the way of character development.
Well, we are pleased to report that this changed to a certain extent on Sunday night’s new episode, as we were even moved in a way by the heart-to-heart at the end, where we were reminded that there really is some common ground here. Why? Marty surprised his son. He didn’t tell him that he wanted him to obey; he just wanted him to be happy, and what he is doing right now is artificial happiness. He was even able to relate it back to himself and his own failures. These two connected in a way that they haven’t, and it brought them back to a brief moment right before he went into prison.
Now, has Marty really changed his way? Yes and no. He seemed to realize that he actually needed to be there with Jeannie as she went in to an ultrasound appointment … but he couldn’t walk inside. He drove away instead.
Was there a win for him in here? Sure, and it comes courtesy of a stock price rising to a level that he really needed it to in order to score a big payout. Now, he has to question whether or not this going to be worth all of the time he has spent away. There were some laughs in here, but more than that we had some really great character stuff that actually made us think we’re going places this season. Grade: A-.
