‘Suits’ season 4, episode 13 review: Troian Bellisario guest stars; did Mike, Louis make up?
“Fork in the Road” may be one of our favorite episodes of “Suits.” It was emotionally powerful, extremely well-acted, and it made use of almost every scene.
On the surface, you could say that there were concerns about the casting of Troian Bellisario. She’s an underrated actress, but given that she and Patrick J. Adams are engaged in real life and that she has a following on “Pretty Little Liars,” it would have been easy to dismiss this as stunt casting. However, Claire was a welcome addition to the show; not only was she a strong, interesting character, but she informed the character of Mike Ross more, including why he lies out of inadequacy. She made him want to pursue law further in order to impress her, but she also in turn further allowed us to see his nature to self-sabotage. He knew the consequences of lying, and yet he did so again to work at the firm.
During this same time period, a young Harvey and Louis both realized that they wanted to advance forward, but they had to impress Hardman to do it. It was sad to see that their contentious relationship was in many ways the result of Daniel’s own manipulation, but to be fair, Harvey and Louis also showed enough disloyalty to each other to make that happen. Using the same clients in the past and the present was smart, especially as Harvey took Louis and Mike on a road trip so that they could resolve their differences. It only took a few shouting matches and also Louis nearly choking Mike for it to happen. Mike also revealed that he didn’t know how to drive.
The best part of this episode? It would have been easy to make the resolution all syrupy sweet, since we had Mike and Louis reconciling and realizing that they are truly better as a team. Instead, they gave us an ending with so much humor and heart in it that we couldn’t help but smile. We’re thrilled that these two are back on good terms, but more than that, that “Suits” gave us an episode that took so many risks that paid off.
Pound for pound, our favorite episode of “Suits” since Louis and Donna went to the theater. Grade: A.
