‘American Idol XIV’ video: Joey Cook, Shannon Berthiaume, more sing ‘Somebody to Love’
Can anybody find me a talented group? To spin the lyrics of the classic Queen song a little, that is a question we wondered going into Wednesday night’s new “American Idol XIV” episode. Sure, we were blessed with quite a bit of talent last week with the start of Group Round, but this is a part of the competition where things do tend to snowball at a very rapid pace.
The women singing below are Joey Cook (sporting a very different hue of hair than the one in the photo), Naomi Tatsuoka, Shannon Berthiaume, and Krista Bettevy, and they all, for the most part, do a very good job of handling this song. Are there some lyrical flubs in here? Sure. Joey messed up and forgot the words, but at least had fun with it and didn’t stop the performance. Meanwhile, Shannon had a tiny mistake around the “water” line, and we’re more worried about her given that she’s had two imperfect performances from this vantage point in Hollywood Week already.
As for Naomi and Krista, there is nothing too negative to report. We especially love the harmonies in the beginning. It shows that they put real time and effort into this, rather than just spending a minute or two figuring out beforehand how they wanted to sing this, and then going out and actually proving themselves. This was a nice change of pace from what we have seen lately.
At the end of this episode, hopefully we’re going to be a little closer to the end of this phase of the competition. We’ve never been crazy about Hollywood Week, and would rather see the artists really get to the live rounds so we can hear them minus editing and with real nerves and stakes in front of the voting public.
We’ll have a review for this episode tomorrow up at the link here, in addition to the rest of our coverage. Also, sign up today to get some further news worth singing about right now via our CarterMatt Newsletter. (Photo: Fox.)
