‘American Idol XIV,’ ‘Empire’ get double-promotion in new Fox promo
The past few weeks have been more or less a rare opportunity for Fox to do a victory dance. Think about it this way. How many times has this particular network gotten a chance to celebrate? The answer there is “not many at all.” Most of their new dramas and comedies in the fall arrived with a resounding thud, so they really need a win.
However, they have clearly figured out something that works for them courtesy of the one-two punch of “Empire” and “American Idol XIV.” While the singing-competition is no longer the enormous hit that it once was, at least it’s still a solid performer! Meanwhile, with “Empire” you’ve got one of those rare dramas that seems to actually be building momentum as it goes along. There really has not been a phenomenon like this in some time; not even “Scandal” has drawn the sort of numbers that “Empire” is right now.
What we are curious about is that with pilot season here, if networks are going to be more keen to pick up either more music-themed shows, or shows that feature a very diverse cast. It used to be a fear that having an African-American or Latino leading man or woman would hurt ratings; however, in between this, “Scandal,” “How to Get Away with Murder,” and “Black-ish” we are clearly seeing otherwise. While “Jane the Virgin” on The CW is not a smah hit, it does at least have critical acclaim.
In getting back to both “Empire” and “Idol,” the promo below does give you a good opportunity to see what lies ahead for both series! This includes a guest appearance by Courtney Love on “Empire,” where she will be reliant on the help of Cookie in order to jump-start her career.
