Super Bowl commercials: Jeff Bridges meditates in new Squarespace ad
As we’ve said a few times during Super Bowl Sunday, we tend to gravitate towards any ad that shows celebrities doing something unusual that we would never expect to see from them.
With this in mind, why don’t we talk for a minute or two about Jeff Bridges meditating? This was an ad for website-builder Squarespace, and it is just about as simple as simple can be. We’re not entirely sure just how much this commercial did at actually promoting the product, but we figure that they are banking on some simple thing: Using the ad to get people to search for the brand, and then finding out more about it.
The good – It’s basically Bridges saying “om” for the entirety of the ad. It is certainly not confusing to watch, is it? He is also a great brand ambassador in that he is pretty universally loved, and he won’t generate controversy for being there.
The bad – As we said, it may be a disadvantage to not say much about Squarespace within the commercial itself. Still, we figure that this is exactly what the company wanted going into it. They are a website, so they want people searching for them. It’s different than a candy bar or something you can just go to the store and buy.
The verdict – We love this ad. It may not be hilarious, but it is so memorable and people will be talking about it. Plus, we could see ourselves actually watching this more than once or twice to try to understand it a little better … if there is anything left to understand. Grade: A-.
