‘American Idol XIV’ review: Tyanna Jones, Rocky Peter, Hunter Larsen rock final auditions
Tonight, “American Idol XIV” is officially concluding its auditions, which is something that you probably can shed a little tear about. There have been good cities (New York), okay ones (New Orleans), and then ones that we’d prefer never existed in the slightest (Minneapolis / St. Paul). We’re concluding tonight with more from San Francisco, which turned out some pretty good talent when we saw it Wednesday night.
Before we start, a quick reminder that we’re only focusing on the singers that are important to the future of the competition, i.e. the quality ones. You can also click here to read our review of the first part of the show right now.
Adanna Duru – She has improved since the last time we saw her on “The Voice” season 3 (the competition well is drying up), but we wish she did something other than an overused Lady Gaga song. We’ve heard worse auditions this season, but also ones that were far and away better.
Hunter Larsen – We really like her! She’s got a very interesting personality, and a good voice to go along with that. It’s not often that we really do get a combination like that, especially one that shines through at such an early portion of the season.
Tara Honda – She is a good singer, and has some nice folk sensibilities behind what she does. We wish we saw more of her.
Daniel Seavey – This kid’s not ready. We know that he got a ton of screen time and the judges ultimately giving him that shot, but he needs another two years, at most.
Rocky Peter – You may have heard about his emotional story before tonight’s episode aired, but we were still moved by it as told through his voice. A little less on the high notes would be nice, but he’s different than anyone we have heard all season.
Jaq Mackenzie – The name is a little too hipster for us, and we feel the same way about her as we did Daniel, except for that she’s a little more creative. We just think that she could benefit from having some more time out there in the world finding herself.
Tyanna Jones – The last singer this season. She’s got a ton of charisma! A pretty good voice, and we like most of all that she chose a fun, age-appropriate song in “Wings.” With that, the auditions are over.
