‘Pretty Little Liars’ season 5, episode 17 review: Aria and Ezra, Spencer and Toby, and more relationship woes

More scoop -We really cannot say that we’ve been the biggest fan of “Pretty Little Liars” the past few weeks, mostly because it feels like we are traveling down the same exact road we’ve seen so many times before. We have the police hunting down the Liars, drama with Aria and Ezra, possible new love interests, and also people with questionable motives.

At the top of the list this week is Emily’s new co-worker Talia, who has some serious love interest vibes going on. She pretended to be into Ezra to figure out if Emily was into men or women, and she has her answer.

Meanwhile, other relationships seemed to be falling apart. When it comes to Hanna, she tried to distance herself from Caleb as she started to think that he could be arrested alongside her. Meanwhile, Ezra read Aria’s letter to college enough times to start thinking that she resented him for not having a normal high-school experience.

As for Spencer, she and Toby were falling apart due in some ways to a conflict of interest. He is a cop now, and he doesn’t want to end up destroying his own life by telling her anything and everything that is going on.

Ashley was the adult character with a decision to make, and at first she seemed uninterested in marrying Ted, thanks in part to what happened between her and Pastor Ted. All of these romantic subplots ultimately had cliffhangers, and no real answers on the horizon.

As for the cliffhanger ending, think along the lines of some very implicating handprints … which suggest bad news, but we’re not really getting that anxious about them right now. After all, we’ve been down this particular road so many times on the show before. “Pretty Little Liars” had a decent episode tonight, but it needs to do something different and daring if it wants to really impress us five seasons in. Grade: C+.
