‘Community’ season 6: Chevy Chase lands first TV pilot since departing show
We have to admit that there was a time we felt that Chevy Chase was never going to return to TV. His exit from “Community” was not in many ways a happy one, and it was also one completely littered with controversy by the time the show ended. Also, he didn’t seem that interested in returning to TV for a while.
What changed his mind? It may have been a desire to get back to work with his former “Vacation” co-star Beverly D’Angelo. ABC ordered today a pilot entitled “Chev & Bev,” which features the two playing grandparents who are enjoying their retirement, but find out all of a sudden that they are now tasked with raising their grandchildren. There were rumors at one point that they were going to reprise their characters as the Griswolds, but clearly that did not come to pass for a variety of different issues.
Will this show get an order? Ultimately, it feels almost like something catered more to TV Land than to ABC, which relies more on younger viewers. We wonder if “Community” fans will be interested at all, and while some old “Vacation” / “Saturday Night Live” fans may be pleased to see D’Angelo’s name on there, as well, this is hardly the most inventive premise in the world.
Before anything else, though, we just have to ensure that this pilot even gets made in the first place. At the moment, this is definitely far from a sure thing, and there are many more hoops the show will need to jump through. For now, a pilot is just a pilot and little else.
