‘Galavant’ finale review: Did King Richard fall, and Isabella get her kiss?

Galavant -Tonight, ABC’s wonderful gem of a comedy “Galavant” came to a close, at least for this season. If you’ve loved this series and its brand of very-silly humor, there is almost nothing in here to criticize.

The one thing that we will say is that clearly, the writers of the show did not intend this to be a series finale. The story came to a close with Galavant and King Richard collectively escaping the castle, mostly knowing the storm was coming for them. Richard’s brother arrived on the scene, and he is terrible. Also, Gareth managed to at least spare most of Galavant’s men.

The biggest surprise of all? That in the end, what we learned here was that Madalena had it in for Richard’s brother all along! He is dead, and she now basically holds all of the power in the kingdom. She named Gareth to be her king-of-sorts, and that is where we lie right now. Isabella and her merry band of misfits are at her cousin’s, which is most inconvenient since he is a child, and he is also her fiance.

Just from an entertainment perspective, we found this episode to be for the most part tremendous. There were countless funny moments, and while the ending was somewhat rushed, we feel like the eight-episode order is the reason why. There really should have been ten episodes this season. Still, we got Sophie McShera singing, Vinnie Jones sort-of-singing, and a very brief Galavant / Isabella kiss near the end of the finale. We had great storytelling, and a heck of a hook to set up next season. Who doesn’t want to see King Richard the underdog.

Please ABC, make this renewal happen. We’ll be forever grateful Grade: A-.
