‘Downton Abbey’ season 5, episode 4 review (PBS): On the Joanne Froggatt – Anna decision
As with all of the other “Downton Abbey” articles that we have presented at CarterMatt this year, what we are going to here is present you with a quick analysis of one particular moment we found interesting during tonight’s new episode on PBS.
Of course, there are SPOILERS ahead, so don’t check this out if you want to be surprised tonight! Also, head over here if you want to see our full review back from when this episode aired in Great Britain.
Now that we have said all of this, let’s talk about what was the primary story surprise in this episode: Anna realizing that her own actions when it comes to the Mr. Green investigation have gotten her in trouble. This is what happens when you turn up in a place you are not supposed to be, and she is getting closer and closer to being a suspect herself.
Do we feel bad for Joanne Froggatt’s character? Definitely, but the biggest reason is that she seems perpetually stuck in this incredibly dramatic rut of not knowing what in the world is coming next for her. Before this, she was stuck having to buy Mary some contraceptives, which is really nothing in comparison.
The great news for Froggatt is that she is getting a flurry of good material, which is why she won the Golden Globe to begin with. We just wonder how the show will continue to deal with this story in the long-term. The worst for Anna is still to come this season; when is it going to be okay for her to be happy?
In the end, we really feel like this story is emblematic of the problems in how crimes are investigated in this time, and also how even the slightest thing can make a police force start to wonder what you are up to.
