‘American Horror Story: Freak Show’ finale review: Dandy Mott, Houdini, and Elsa Mars
Well folks, we are at the end of our “American Horror Story: Freak Show” journey and while some of the major storylines this season have been wrapped up we have one delicious dangling thread left: Dandy Mott is the new owner of the Elsa’s freak show. With Dandy never really being in charge of anything in his life (and also basically being a psycho man child) we expect this to end badly for everyone. That being said though… the more Dandy we have, the better it will be.
Dandy Mott: He’s given himself the headlining spot and it’s not selling any tickets. Of course he blames the freaks for the low ticket sales and they remind him that he’s not a freak, doesn’t belong and they all quit. He does not take their resignation lightly and kills everyone that threatened to quit. After killing everyone (or so he thinks) he offers Bette and Dot a chance to survive, by marrying him… and they accept.
So did they live happily ever after? Nope, it was a set up and Desiree and Jimmy are there to help end the nightmare. They start by making giving him what he’s always wanted – to be part of the freak show. They chain him in Houdini’s famous escape tank and start filling it with water, then sit back and watch him die.
Elsa: She has not given up on her dream of being a huge Hollywood star and is harassing the head of WBN every day until he sees her. She never gets to see him, but she meets Michael Beck, junior VP of casting. He turns her into a star, gets her a headlining show, a recording contract and she marries him. Is everything as grand as it seems? Well she is a star, but their marriage is a mess and she still doesn’t seem to be that happy.
When the head of the network learns of the videos she made in the past and that a paper is going to publish the story about Elsa’s videos she loses her contract. She decides to perform on Halloween as her last show, hoping that Edward Mordrake will come for her. And he did indeed come for her, but he did not take her soul. Instead her soul ended up back with all of the other freaks from her show that were murdered and is finally happy again with her family.
Dandy needed to get his just desserts, there’s no doubt about that and this was a pretty rough way to go out to say the least, but did he need to be in his underwear again? Desiree got her wish and she had children with the love of her life. Jimmy, Dot and Bette ended up together and are expecting a baby. As for Elsa we had hoped that she was going to pay for what she did, but seems she ended up back where she started and there was no paying for her wrong doings which was a major let down. Episode grade: C+

Freakshow is the only AHS I’ve seen. I loved it, I did hope for a more shocking finale, other than that I was completely amused.

They made a major storyline mistake by killing off Twisty as early on as they did. Despite being as accomplished a killer as Dandy, he was in many ways his mirror opposite. An embodiment of pure evil, Dandy was an intelligent man who killed and relished killing for the pleasure of it. At the other end of the spectrum was Twisty, an originally slow-witted and eventually unhinged clown who killed for no more complicated reason than he wanted to “make the children love him again” and felt like the “mean people” were keeping them (the kiddies) from enjoying his show. Imagine how the show might’ve unwound if it had ended up with the final confrontation being between Twisty and Dandy. Oh well….
It was an okay season with plenty of nice moments. But by and large it just felt as if the writers spent more time thinking up the characters they wanted than they did trying to then come up with a plot line that actually moved forward. For me, season 4 ranks 4th out of all of the AHS seasons – fun enough, but not quite great.
