Fox orders adaptation for ‘Luther’ adaptation; Idris Elba producing
Why is Fox deciding to remake another British show? We’re still wondering that. The American version of “Broadchurch” in “Gracepoint” ended up being a flop for the network; not only that, but those who actually did watch until the end were heavily critical of what the show ultimately decided to do.
Well, regardless of what we may think or are concerned about, it’s clear that Fox is moving forward with the project anyway. It was confirmed today that the network has at least ordered a pilot for a new version of “Luther.” The silver linings here include that it will be written by original series creator Neil Cross, and that Idris Elba will serve as an executive producer. (He will not star.)
There is a major caveat here that we really should mention, and that is the fact that this entire pilot will be contingent on its cast. That means that in theory, Fox could come back and change their mind on the project if it turns out that there is not a cast on board that they approve of. It’s a smart move to really cover themselves in this case, and prevent another enormous disaster from taking shape where they have an adaptation with low ratings.
This is also a very different strategy than one employed by former Fox programming head Kevin Reilly, who gave many straight-to-series orders during his tenure, including to some shows that never aired, and to others that have already been canceled. Gary Walden and Dana Newman seem a little more old-school, and less interested in trying to turn Fox into a cable network.
