‘Call the Midwife’ season 4, episode 1 review: Trixie’s proposal and other surprises

Trixie -Call the Midwife” aired a Christmas special late last year, but prior to that, it had been an extraordinarily long time since we’d had an update or two on what the residents of Nonnatus House were up to. Sunday night’s new episode was meant in part as a way to catch up with some of our favorite characters.

Tonight’s episode definitely felt like a classic installment, almost as though the show had not missed a beat at all. Many of the stories were fixated once again around sad, personal stories revolving around women who were trying to make ends meet despite difficult circumstances. The midwives in some ways are heroes, though they are flawed in their own right.

For the characters tonight, the one with the biggest story was Trixie courtesy of one simple proposal … which she happened to say yes to! This is obviously going to be a game-changer for the character, since she has to figure out how she will want to move forward with her own life. Could this change things for her job? It at least has to be considered.

While there many tear-jerking moments throughout the hour, we like to think that there was a certain element of hope at the very end of it as we heard more about the children’s stories. We would say overall that, at least within the sphere of this show, it was a hopeful premiere. We do wish that more had taken place throughout, but as a whole there was a good bit to like here as Shelagh and the rest of the midwives continued their transition. Grade: B.
