‘Chicago Fire’ season 3 spoilers: NBC still looking at ‘Chicago Med’ spin-off idea

The rumors surrounding a potential “Chicago Fire” spin-off entitled “Chicago Med” for NBC first surfaced a good year or so ago, but clearly, they did not go anywhere at the time.

So is it possible now that the rumor could actually hold a little more weight? If nothing else, you should know that this is something that the network is currently looking at. Speaking at the Winter TCA panel Friday, programming head Robert Greenblatt made it very clear that this spin-off is a possibility, depending of course on the story and if there is something interesting enough to make this really happen:

“[The idea] is something that we’re seeding into the system … We’re seeing if there’s a show there that could eventually spin off.”

We feel like if there is a really great story, then this is something that the network should really consider. However, we don’t feel like they are desperate for it, either. This is not the same NBC that at one point was plugging “The Biggest Loser” everywhere, and while the Dick Wolf franchise is fairly lucrative, neither “Chicago Fire” nor “Chicago PD” is the sort of smash that it necessitates having a new entry into that world on the air. This would basically mean that a good four hours of eighteen available in primetime (almost 25%) from Monday-Sunday would be shows all in the same universe. You cannot forget about “Law & Order: SVU,” even if it is set in a different city.

This could be a good fallback option for the network in the event that there is not a good pilot season for them, but otherwise, we’d be shocked if this happened for the coming fall.
