Golden Globes spotlight: Viola Davis, Claire Danes, Julianna Margulies battle for Drama Actress prize
We find that the Actress in a Drama Series category at most awards shows is typically one that we cannot typically sign off on. Why? Maybe it’s because we are still bitter about not seeing Tatiana Maslany on there.
Admittedly, we are still a little bit bummed about not having the “Orphan Black” star on the Golden Globes list this year, but even with that being said, this is one of the more interesting categories. We wouldn’t declare there to be a clear-cut favorite, though we would say that there are three candidates in the front, and then two who would be a complete shock at the moment to win.
The nominees – Viola Davis (“How to Get Away with Murder,” ABC), Julianna Margulies (“The Good Wife,” CBS), Claire Danes (“Homeland,” Showtime), Ruth Wilson (“The Affair,” Showtime), Robin Wright (“House of Cards,” Netflix).
Who should win – It may be a somewhat-boring choice, but we’re going to say Margulies given the resurgence of “The Good Wife” the past season and a half, and the wonderful range of emotions she brings to the role. Alicia Florrick is a magnificent TV character; she’s smart, she’s funny, and while she can at times bring the thunder, the show gives her so many different levels to play at so that it never feels like we are being bombarded with any one thing. We’d have Davis in second position, mostly because the first half of “How to Get Away with Murder” this season was a little bit of a mess.
Who will win – We’re going to say Viola, and we will be very happy if she does. Most of the show’s problems are not due to her, and she’s a critical darling from her past work to go along with this one. “House of Cards” will be forgotten, “The Affair” is almost too green, and given that both Margulies and Danes have been so successful, we feel like there will be some Globe voters wanting to spread the love around to a new show.
Who do you think will win this year?
