‘American Idol XIV’ video: Meet Trevor Douglas, Riley Bria, and Piper Jones

Tomorrow night, the journey finally begins again on “American Idol” with the season premiere. We’ve been doing spotlights of some various contestants’ auditions for the new season, but the bad news is that basically, we’ve run out of videos to analyze!

Therefore, the videos that we have for you below basically feature a variety of the different contestants that we’re going to meet over the course of the season, including “one-man party” Trevor Douglas, Nashville native Piper Jones, and Keith Urban mega-fan Riley Bria. Of the three, we feel like Riley seems to have the best chance to be super-legit, though we’re pretty hopeful about Piper, as well. As for Trevor, that could go either way. His edit makes him look a little like a joke, but this could just be a way of getting us thrown off the scent.

We feel like at this point, having a huge personality is really almost as big as being a good performer. We’ve seen a number of winners of this show that can sing their faces off, but they don’t exactly have the intangibles that you need to be a star after the fact. It was a different time during the earlier seasons, and even then, not everyone could become a star.

If these contestants really want to succeed, they need to go back and look at the journey of a few select people on the show: Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, David Cook, and Adam Lambert. We feel like these four in particular really understood that this was more than a TV show, and tried to take advantage of every performance.
