Golden Globes spotlight: ‘Veep,’ ‘Jane the Virgin,’ ‘Orange is the New Black’ stars battle
Sunday night’s Golden Globes are starting to creep up more and more, and as that happens, we’re continuing our nomination spotlight series with what may be the easiest-to-call category of the entire field right now: Actress in a Comedy Series. While there are one or two potential upset candidates, this really feels like you have one person out in front, and then many others trying to do what they can to stay afloat.
Remember at the end of this article to let us know some of your own personal picks in the poll below. Without further ado now, let’s dive in and get to some of the predicting.
The nominees – Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Veep,” HBO), Lena Dunham (“Girls,” HBO), Gina Rodriguez (“Jane the Virgin,” The CW), Taylor Schilling (“Orange Is the New Black,” Netflix), Edie Falco (“Nurse Jackie,” Showtime).
Who should win – We’re torn over Schilling and Falco being classified in here, mostly because their shows are barely considered comedies at all. Still, of the two, Taylor is the one who should have a serious shot at winning the trophy. Had Amy Poehler been nominated, we may have been willing to veer from the predictable winner, but Louis-Dreyfus is just sensational on “Veep.” Without her, this show falls apart. How do you award it to someone else? This isn’t a “Modern Family” case, where the show is weakening every single season.
Who will win – Louis-Dreyfus has this, and it probably will not even be close. We’re thrilled for Rodriguez, but we don’t see “Jane the Virgin” pulling off an upset. Dunham’s “Girls” had an off season, and Schilling is the best alternative. Still, we feel like there are enough voters torn over the laugh factor of “Orange Is the New Black” that it could have trouble. We love the show, but dramedies often struggle in finding where they belong in awards shows.
