‘American Idol XIV’ spotlight: Adam Lasher auditions with creative cover of Rihanna’s ‘Stay’

Adam Lasher -It’s crazy in a way to think that we have been profiling “American Idol XIV” auditions for several days now, but Adam Lasher is the first guy we’ve come around to. We feel like that is more of an indicator of the auditions that are out there, though, than a sign that there is a weaker pool of men this year. It’s far too early to know whether or not the men are going to bring it, or if we are going to have season 12 all over again.

Rather than focus on a whole demographic, thought, let’s spend a minute talking a little bit about what Adam brings to the table, and how we’re curious to see if him and his magical headband can last a reasonable amount of time.

Song choice – Rihanna’s “Stay.” It’s a cool song for him to be doing, mostly because it’s one that provides a good bit of depth, and also happens to be current enough so that people at home will recognize it, and want to root for him. The challenge here is giving it a little more of a melody.

The performance – There’s definitely a little bit of blues in Adam, and while we’ve had some similar contestants before, we’re not sure that anyone has all the components that he does. He almost feels a little like Jessica Meuse meets Casey Abrams. We don’t really get a full sense of what he can do vocally here, though, and that is what makes him a little bit of a wild card after listening to this.

Our verdict – He’s such a unique guy that it’s hard to imagine him getting anything other than three “yes” votes to advance. With his voice being a little unknown still, though, one of his big challenges is going to come in the next round, trying to find some other new ways to show off what he can do.
