At this point, do we hold any new footage of “The Walking Dead” sacred? If the answer to that is “yes,” you’ll probably appreciate the new promo that was just released by AMC. Otherwise, you’ll probably find yourself wanting much more, given the tiny amount of new footage contained here.
In this preview, the brief shot of Lauren Cohan’s Maggie near the beginning constitutes new footage, and the rest are various clips that have been in other previews. This does still accentuate the terrible position that this character finds herself in for the second half of season 5: While she may have Glenn in her life still, she has lost two of the other people she cares about deeply in Hershel and Beth. The other terrible part of this is that neither were killed by walkers; instead, they were killed by pretty terrible people trying to make a power claim in this complicated world.
Beth’s death will have an enormous impact in the early going, not only on Maggie, but also on Daryl. This is a man who has made an effort to avoid as many deep relationships throughout his life, but she was one of the few who actually started to forge a connection with him. The possibility of a romance there is almost irrelevant now, but you cannot take the bond away. Will Daryl pull away from Carol and everyone else now? We wonder, just as we wonder what the impact Beth’s passing will have on Maggie and Glenn.
“The Walking Dead” returns to AMC on Sunday, February 9 at 9:00 p.m. Eastern. We’re pretty confident there will be much more in the way of news to share before then.
