‘Homeland’ season 4 finale spoilers: Does Mandy Patinkin’s Saul want back in?
If there is one thing that we’ve learned about Saul on “Homeland,” it is a guy who really has a tough time letting go of the spy game. Someone really could play “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday” to this guy, and it would make ultimately a heck of a lot of sense.
The reason that we think that Mandy Patinkin’s character struggled with this for so much is simply a matter of him not knowing many other ways to live. He has obsessed over his job for many years, and that is how he knows how to function. We saw him at the end of the season when he did not know what to do with himself anymore. It’s not about the money or the glory so much as getting the job done.
This is why, in the sneak peek below, Saul makes it clear that he wants “back in.” Clearly, he wants to finish whatever he started in a way.
Is this a good idea? For the CIA, sure. Even if Saul is not in charge anymore, he is extremely capable, persuasive, and sharp as a tack. However, at the same time it cannot be that smart of a move for him as a person. He barely escaped death earlier this season, and that will probably happen many times over before this ends. Also, don’t forget here that this is a heck of a stressful job.
