‘Top Chef: Boston’ episode 9 preview: Katsuji puts a massacre on a plate
Sometimes, we really dig “Top Chef” when they allow the contestants to really get creative, and for the episode airing on Wednesday night, we are going to have that and then some courtesy of a literary-themed challenge.
As the episode synopsis suggests below, the story for this episode revolves around the chefs having to cook dishes inspired by a great writer; not only that, but there are a few notable guests below:
“Chefs are challenged to create the biggest and tastiest sausage dishes they can concot when New England Patirots football player Rob Gronkowski steps in as guest judge for the Quickfire Challenge. Next up, the chefs must brush up on their reading for a unique Elimination Challenge where their dishes must be inspired by a literary work from a famous New England author including Stephen King, Edgar Allen Poe, Emily Dickinson, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Dr. Seuess. As the chefs cook their cusiine to bring fiction to the plate, they hope their dishes don’t get lost in translation as the judges are joined by Chef Tony Maws and Clarkson Potter Editor Francis Lam at the Judges’ Table.”
The video below shows the resident mad scientist Katsuji coming up with something really garish, only he gets so nervous that he forgets who he was inspired by when presenting it to the judges. We saw in another preview that it is King, which makes plenty of sense. We actually think that his dish looks totally cool, and we only hope that it tastes somewhat similar to the excellent presentation. This episode reminds us a little of the “Snow White and the Huntsmen” one with Charlize Theron a while back.
We like Katsuji a lot as a “Top Chef” character; he may be polarizing and he’s probably not going to win, but at least he is a big personality who stirs the pot, and manages to cook great food despite being a little all over the place.
