‘Survivor: San Juan del Sur’ interview: Alec Christy on beating Drew, elimination, Keith’s mistake
Throughout most of the season on “Survivor: San Juan del Sur,” Alec Christy had a bit of a rollercoaster. He was never edited like the strategist, and constantly found himself on the outside looking in after the merge.
Still, were it not for Keith screwing up a great plan and for Natalie flipping, he would still be in the game right now with a shot at running the table. He hadn’t been much of an immunity threat so far, but that could have changed.
In a conference call last week, we talked with Alec a little about his game, defeating his brother Drew, and what his experience was really like on Exile Island.
CarterMatt – In general, how do you feel about this experience, and being able to beat your brother Drew?
Alec Christy – Beating Drew, I’m not going to lie. I knew I was going to do that. In between him being a little more outspoken, I think he was definitely a bigger threat … Anytime that I can beat Drew, I’m still catching up on my wins being the younger brother, [I’m happy]. At the end of the day, Drew’s on my team. It was good to go out and have that experience.
Did you feel pretty good going into this past tribal council, thinking that Natalie was going to vote out Keith?
I definitely don’t want to say I felt good, because I knew that it was either me or Keith who was going home. I [felt that way] especially because Jon won the immunity. Had Jon not won immunity, everything could have been different. It wasn’t a huge surprise … I did think that it was going to be Keith that night, but Natalie flipped her vote because I think she thought that [possibly] I would be a little harder to manipulate than Keith. I’m not really sure, but that was the way that the cards fell.
What was happening with you and some of the immunities? I think on paper you are one of those guys people expect to do really well.
I did do well in some of them, but then there was the foot challenge, having to make something with your feet. I’m not going to win that! The very last one I just went to Exile. I was really beat. They didn’t show it, but it was a two-day Exile. I was starving and it was miserable. Two-day Exile on day 30 is serious. My body was really hurting, and it was hard to focus … I was not in it.
That was part of it, and those challenges are funky, man. You can’t really prepare for it.
Did you look for any potential idol when you are at Exile?
I looked a little, but I knew Jon had it … You’ve got to save your energy for whatever the most productive and smartest things are, because at that point any energy being wasted [is rough]. You can’t waste energy when you have so little.
Had Keith not said ‘stick to the plan’ earlier in the game, would you be talking to me right now?
I know for a fact I would not be talking to you right now had that move worked and we got Jon out. It would have changed the game, it would have put everyone in that fivesome alliance on their heels, and I think us, the four of us that made that move, I don’t want to say [we would] feel comfortable, but that would have been a huge morale and spirit lift. It would be a game-changer. If you get Jon out with an idol in his pocket, then you have Jaclyn, who wasn’t much of a threat with Jon there, but with him gone she would just be there and look good.
That would have changed the entire game.
