‘The Leftovers’ season 2 spoilers: Location moving; cast overhaul coming

The Leftovers -When the second season of “The Leftovers” airs on HBO next year, there could be a few people out there wondering if this is even the same show.

After all, the Damon Lindelof series is undergoing a major creative overhaul as season 1 was a bit of a commercial disappointment, and the show is also stepping away somewhat from its Tom Perrotta source material. According to Deadline, we are going to see not only a change in location, but many of the series regulars will not be returning. While Justin Theroux will still be the lead and we’ll still see most of his family, most of the rest of the cast’s fate is a mystery save for Carrie Coon (Nora) and Christopher Eccleston (Matt). they are both going to return.

The difficult thing to us about “overhauling” the show is that we never thought that the cast or the setting were the problems. Instead, we are talking here mostly about the show’s tone. It is good to be at times dark and depressing, but that is all this show was the majority of the time. It was so bleak that it became impossible to watch, regardless of how good the quality of the writing or the performances were.

What we really hope for is that Lindelof is going to be able to create something that is tonally closer to “Lost,” where you at least have a little glimmer of hope in the midst of the despair. That was a dark show, as well, but you managed to infuse enough heart in it that it was ultimately okay.

What do you think about this news, and do you think that it will really aid “The Leftovers” to get some new creativity and spirit into the show? Share your thoughts with a comment, and head over here if you want to get some further updates via our CarterMatt Newsletter. (Photo: HBO.)
