‘American Horror Story’ season 5: Kathy Bates open for another go after ‘Freak Show’
We suppose it is best to start off this “American Horror Story: Freak Show” article with a necessary warning: Stop reading right now if you want to avoid spoilers from tonight’s episode.
Well, now that we’ve said this, let us proceed to roll our eyes a little at the latest twist that we’re not thrilled about: Ethel is gone. She was the most likable member of the group to us, and the emotional heart in many ways for Elsa Mars and her show. With that in mind, her absence is going to be very much felt in the weeks and months moving forward, and we’re not entirely sure who to root for anymore.
Kathy Bates did hint to Entertainment Weekly that we could see Ethel again in flashbacks or something else moving forward, but on the subject of her future with the franchise, she made it clear (thankfully) that she is game to do another one of these in the future:
“Well of course there is. I love Ryan. I love working with him and for him. One thing I didn’t get a chance to say in my Emmy speech is that after Harry’s Law and then I had gotten sick with breast cancer, I was really in the dumps. I was really like, ‘I’ll never work again. I’m too old. Blah blah blah.’ Lo and behold, I get this amazing call from Ryan to come in and meet with him. He created these wonderful parts for me to play and I’ll be forever in his debt for that. He’s rejuvenated my career in a way that I have a young audience now and that’s fabulous! So why wouldn’t I want to come back for more of that?”
Allow that to be your silver lining for a potential role for her next season. We just hope that she gets a larger part this time, and one that won’t be killed off just over halfway through.
