‘The Walking Dead’ season 5: AMC apologizes for midseason finale ‘spoiler’ on Facebook
How early is too early to spoil something on a beloved show? This is a subject that has remained a hot topic of conversation for many over the past several years, especially with social media becoming more and more prevalent in terms of how networks promote things.
Well, over the weekend AMC got themselves in some hot water with viewers over posting a “Walking Dead” spoiler on the show’s official Facebook page prior to the airing on the midseason finale on the West Coast. Yesterday, they apologized by writing the following message, promising that this would not happen again:
“We heard your feedback to last night’s post, and we’re sorry … With zero negative intent, we jumped the gun and put up a spoiler. Please know we’re going to work to ensure that, in the future, possible spoilers by official AMC social feeds are killed before they can infect, certainly before the West Coast (U.S.) broadcast of The Walking Dead. As always, thank you for watching, and keep the comments coming. We appreciate all of your support. #RIPSpoiler.”
There is no hard and fast rule when it comes to such things as spoilers, but our personal feeling on it is this. Networks don’t necessarily have an obligation to not spoil things for the West Coast, but it makes sense professionally to avoid ruining their own shows. Either wait until after they air, or target them in such a way that they make it clear to West Coast viewers that there are spoilers within.
However, at the same time viewers who are either on Pacific time or are watching things late should not expect the entire internet to cater to them. Make sure to the best of your ability that you stay away from dangerous places. If a “Walking Dead” page were to wait for 24 hours before posting anything about the events of the latest episode, they’d lose so much of that interactivity.
The second part of this season premieres in February, so it’s to be seen if the network manages to figure all of this out by then.
