‘Game of Thrones’ season 5: HBO launches mysterious #TheSight campaign
“Game of Thrones” has always been at the forefront of the latest and greatest in TV marketing, and there is by and large a major reason for that: They are the highest-rated and most-popular show on HBO, and with that in mind, they have quite the extraordinary opportunity to really shell a lot of money into creative ideas.
With that in mind, we introduce you to #TheSight, an elaborate campaign that the series is in the middle of right now as a means to better promote the upcoming fifth season. If we had to guess, the purpose behind this campaign seems to be relatively simple: Finding unique ways to get as many different people as possible engaged in the promotion for the new season. You sign up at the website in the tweet below, and then after that, you start getting messages either via your phone or via your Twitter whenever there is something more to report.
Basically, this is a very smart way for HBO to leverage technology to let you know immediately when there is something new to report on the future of the show, and you don’t have to go out and look for it as much. Plus, we have a hard time imagining that they are going to start spamming your Twitter inbox with various messages or whatnot.
In the end, this feels like a great step for the show, but we’ll ultimately have to wait and see whether or not this translates into any better ratings or attention for them during the offseason. It’s at least something new, and we always appreciate the effort.
