2014 AMAs: Taylor Swift opens show with ‘Blank Space’ performance
Tonight, the American Music Awards obviously wanted to open with as big of an impression as possible. What did this mean for us as viewers? Basically, it is so simple as trying to watch a performance from one of the night’s biggest stars in Taylor Swift.
While Taylor’s biggest hit of the year was clearly “Shake It Off,” “Blank Space” is the song that she is currently in the process of promoting. Therefore, this eprformance got the elaborate dinner-party treatment during the show.
As a performer, Taylor is fantastic at selling her emotion to the audience, and also helping to come up with interesting, exquisite concepts. However, we really didn’t like how much Taylor’s voice was obscured for the most part by an extremely loud backing track. Note that she wasn’t lip-syncing, and we do not want to open up that can of worms right now with the fan base. However, this sort of backing track can take us out of a performance, and usually Swift does not rely on one.
In the end, we wonder whether or not non-Swift fans are going to be satisfied with this, since the majority of the opening numbers in past years have been well-known for having guest collaborators, heavy set pieces, and a whole lot more. This was a good performance for Taylor, but we have seen many more surprises on the show over the years.
We’ll have some more news related to the show throughout the night, so stay tuned.
