‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 11 episode 8 review: Did Meredith and Derek break up; what about April’s baby?

Poster -“The carousel never stops turning. You can’t get off.”

These words closed Thursday night’s “Grey’s Anatomy” winter finale, which was arguably a watershed episode not just for the series, but also for the characters of Meredith and Derek. After all, at this point their relationship hangs in the balance, and there are so many different directions in which the story could go. Sadly, we are going to have to wait until January to find out an answer.

Is there a reason to be hopeful? Share. The two parties did not get a divorce, and clearly, there is still love there. The memories that cycled through Meredith’s head are proof of that. However, Derek’s choice to finally go to Washington DC means a huge change for the show, and for this character. What does this mean for Patrick Dempsey? He is under contract for at least another season after this one, so even if his role is limited in the weeks ahead, he is not going anywhere.

This still made for some poignant, emotional moments at the end of what was an emotional episode elsewhere. After all, there is something seriously wrong with April and Jackson’s baby, and no one seems to have the heart to tell them. Would they be doing this if it was an ordinary patient? Definitely not, and this is what makes this so morally ambiguous. We are setting up for something terrible here, even if the child lives.

Elsewhere, there were at least some happy moments. Callie’s trials are turning out better, Alex and Jo have an understanding about his house, and there was a good moment in here for Amelia with Owen.

It’s just a shame that by the time the episode ended, you probably found yourself choked up about one of TV’s most-beloved couples, who desperately needs a break, a win, or something. It was a great episode, but still a hard one to digest. Grade: A-.
