MTV’s ‘Awkward’ season 4, episode 20 review: Matty’s dad, Jenna’s worries, and Lissa 2.0

Awkward -Tonight, the first part of the “Awkward” finale aired on MTV, and it was definitely something that lived up to the name. We saw spring break begin, and Jenna Hamilton start to realize that all of her petty problems were really just that: Petty problems.

Surprisingly, breakups were a big theme of this episode, given that Sadie and Sergio started to fall apart after she bragged and boasted about getting her scholarship (even if she apologized in the end), and Lissa realized that her relationship with Tyler was not nearly as exciting without all of the passion.

Then, we turn to Jenna and Matty. After we saw the surprising arrival of Gabby to spring break, it changed everything for the two, including his plans to take his friend with him to meet his biological father. This guy ended up being somewhat of a stoner and a loser, and to make matters worse, Matty didn’t want to talk about it.

The good news for Jenna is that surprisingly, she didn’t really care anymore. Much like many high schoolers do at this time, she started to really see more of the outside world, take it in, and realize that there are other goals out there to have. In meeting Brian the Marine, who had his life together, she had some key revelations. We want to think that she is ready to move forward, and make Matty pursue her for a change, but we’ll have to see if that really happens.

Now, we come to the cheesy part of the episode: The Japanese tourists. Really, we have to go there? This was just so cheesy, and while we know that the show has a history here, we were never a fan of all the “Asian mafia” stuff that they pulled in past seasons. Episode Grade: B-.
