‘So You Think You Can Dance’ season 12 official; will have unique theme
How about this for a pleasant surprise when it comes to “So You Think You Can Dance“? After starting to worry and think that the end of the road could be almost here for the dance competition, it was confirmed on Monday that Fox has greenlit the show for a 12th season.
As it turns out, this is not going to be an ordinary year for the show, either. The theme this time around is going to be two teams of ten competing, with one team consisting of more classical dances (contemporary, ballroom, jazz, etc.), with the other consisting of more street dances like hip-hop or animation.
In a statement, show co-creator and executive producer Nigel Lythgoe said the following:
“The competition is going to be much more exciting for viewers and even more demanding for the dancers … Dancers from different genres have always been competitive with each other and we’ve found a great way to harness that to bring out the absolute best performances in the best dancers across the country.”
We’re not sure that the format tweak will really impact the series very much, except for maybe giving more hip-hop dancers a chance and limiting the number of contemporary / ballroom specialists this year. What matters more than anything is that this is by our estimation the premiere talent competition on TV, and it gets another chance to feature great dancers showcasing real, artistic routines from some of the best choreographers in the world.
Hopefully, the ratings this coming summer will stay relatively steady, and this is a show that will still have some life in it yet. We spend almost every summer these days worried over its future, but it has officially now survived the regime change at Fox.

I love that SYTCD was renewed. I also like the twist. However, I fear that if the ratings aren’t great, this will be its last season.
