‘The Newsroom’ season 3, episode 2 video: A quick look at Kat Dennings, Jane Fonda
One of the interesting things about the way that “The Newsroom” was filmed for this third and final season was that rather than make some sort of enormous casting announcement about someone joining the show, the series just finds a way to work them into the story in as unique a fashion as possible.
With that in mind, we have the arrival of Kat Dennings on Sunday night’s new episode, and the second one of the season. Who is she playing? Based on the promo below, she is going to be one of the half-siblings Reece Lansing warned us about in the premiere, who is doing just about all she can in order to poach ACN’s parent company alongside her brother. This is where Leona Lansing (Jane Fonda) steps in and has her voice heard for the first time this season.
To be honest, we are somewhat surprised that there was room or time to give the Lansing family a whole lot of attention on this season, given that it is not only the final one, but that there are only six episodes. That is not a whole lot of airtime on HBO to put some new storylines on the air, and it is even more difficult when they are characters who do not entirely exist within the newsroom environment.
For Dennings, though, we are sure that this marks a wonderful detour from playing the crass, largely-crude character of Max over on CBS’ “2 Broke Girls.” That show may have a following, but it is a very different one than what we are talking about here.

Olivia Munn meets Kat Dennings? Smart meets Sassy.
This will make history! I love them both.
