‘NCIS: Los Angeles’ season 6, episode 7 review: Sam’s new obsession, Nell the hero
After last week with Sam being accused of murder (and cleared of it) on “NCIS: Los Angeles” we thought that maybe that experience might have him a little on edge this week, but he’s back to his old self and focused on the job… and getting even with one of his instructors.
Sam wants to get better at his weak-hand shooting after he was beaten by the instructor (as an instructor should), so he is spending a lot of his off time trying to get better so next time his instructor is in town for training he can beat them. His obsession with getting better with his weak hand was amusing to Callen (and us) as he walked around doing hand strengthening exercises.
The case of the week involved a drone (more like a remote control airplane with an explosive on it) and because Nell is an expert on remote controlled anything, she was a big help on the case – such a big help that Hetty made sure to acknowledge her contribution to the team. She’s such a nerd and we love her for it, but Hetty wants to move her into being a full fledged agent. Nell tells her that she knows she’s not the strong, athletic type or a potential sniper, but feels that she can get there her own way.
Not a lot really happened with our main cast in this episode, which was a bit of a bummer since we are invested in these characters and want more on them. There wasn’t even any movement on the story line about the mole within the agency. The case of the week wasn’t the best this show has done, but we did like the remote controlled airplane bomb. Episode review: C

This has been a disappointment to me. Instead of focusing on Navy-related crimes in the Los Angeles area, this show seems more about highlighting the Beautiful People in Southern California (Deeks??) and Navy SEAL abilities, though there is nothing in law enforcement that requires assassin skill. Why, oh why, does every cop show have to have a ‘former Navy SEAL’ as a character? And the whole Afghanistan trip? Ridiculous and very, very shallow.
There is nothing new in what they do, no excitement in how they do it, and absolutely nothing that takes these characters outside their trite, worn Beautiful People boxes. The relationship between Callen and Hetty was short-lived for less than a season, and there is not nearly enough chemistry between the actors to have any kind of realistic romance. And now we are expected to believe that a technical analyst is going to be a field agent? Seriously, writers. Get a grip!
Since expanding the NCIS roster of programs to three cities, perhaps the executive producers are losing out to the Boredom Lords. I would give the series as a whole a D grade.
