‘Hell on Wheels’ season 4, episode 12 preview: The story for Anson Mount, cast in ‘Thirteen Steps’
Tonight’s episode of “Hell on Wheels” was certainly an intense one, given that we spent most of the entire hour dealing with the moral quandary that was Sydney Snow. What do you do with him: Is it right to treat him inhumanely due to his crimes, especially when you are trying to save the life of someone else?
The title for next week’s episode is “Thirteen Steps,” and much of the storyline that we are going to see take place here is a tale all about Cullen Bohannon having to deal with some of the choices that Ruth made at the end of this episode. As it turns out, Louise is also going to have a substantial story to go along with it.
You can see the short synopsis, per TV Guide, below:
“Cullen grapples with Ruth’s unexpected decision; Louise jeopardizes her reputation to fight for a story she believes in.”
The biggest issue that we see moving forward with Cullen is strictly one of trying to figure out the balance between being a good lawman, and being the person he really wants to be for Ruth. Obviously, he doesn’t want to put her to death. Nobody in Cheyenne does. However, does he really have a choice?
The promo that aired following tonight’s episode basically made it clear that there could be a tide turning against Anson Mount’s character the longer that this legal matter wages, but he is not going to give up entirely when it comes to Ruth, either. It’s just unfortunate that he is battling the government. Even if John Campbell goes, someone else will take his place with less understanding of the situation.

I thought this episode was somewhat disjointed and unnecessarily graphic. I did’t really need to see Syd’s leg sawed off. How did Syd’s get all cleaned up and Cullen didn’t? Didn’t Snow die as a result of actions he took? Trying to shoot Cullen and climbing out the window causing his stump to bleed mightily. That’s not Ruth’s fault. She needs a good lawyer.
