MTV’s ‘Awkward’ season 4, episode 18 review: Matty’s birthday leads to Gabby – Jenna crisis

Tonight’s new episode of “Awkward” brought out a surprising side to many characters, mostly in that there were a few very unexpected developments that happened over the course of the half-hour.

With that being said, we waited for most of the episode for the other shoe to drop. For example, we had a certain issue when it comes to college applications. Jenna spent most of the episode thinking that she had finally made it into school, and even went around telling everyone. However, she did not actually open the envelope that was in the mail, and realized a little later that it ultimately was her own mother’s.

Of course, Jenna did overreact to the news of rejection much in the way that she often does, and that was by lashing out at her mom over it. Then, a drunk Matty, fresh off of a birthday celebration that included strippers and being nice to Gabby (one of those unexpected things), showed up at her house. We actually thought at first this was going to lead into something predictable like the two sleeping together and making things messy … and at first it looked like something else was going to happen as he opened up his adoption papers.

Then, the predictable happened and Matty tried to make out with Jenna. However, she said no! The fact that the kiss still happened cannot be forgotten, but this was a welcome move by her to cut things off, realizing that Gabby was actually pretty cool and it would hurt her.

Still, we wish that the episode was a little funnier than it was, and that we couldn’t telegraph part of the ending from a mile away. Grade: B-.
