‘The Walking Dead’ season 5, episode 4 review: Was the Beth episode a win or a fail?
Have you been waiting to know what happened to Beth on “The Walking Dead”? Last time we saw her she was being shoved into a car and taken somewhere and Daryl has been desperate to find out where she is and get her back with the group. After seeing the same car drive by, Daryl and Carol jump into a car and take off after it to find Beth – Will they be able to rescue her or will they be too late?
Beth is in a hospital with what looks like minimal injuries, but a cop named Dawn tells her that they saved her life and she owes them (seems the cops run the hospital). They keep tabs on what everyone uses, takes and does and is expected to give back to the hospital to pay off their debts for saving their lives.
Beth quickly learns that no matter how much of your debt you “pay off” Dawn will never let people leave – and even if they wanted to leave, the hospital is surrounded by walkers. The cops only grab the people they think are weak and scrawny, people that won’t fight back. Beth tries to tell Dawn that she wants to leave as soon as her debt is paid off, but Dawn tries to spin this whole place as a positive: They have food, clean clothes, medical supplies and a group that works together.
Gorman (a cop) quickly reveals himself to be a creep, laying claim to women in the hospital and Beth is his latest interest. Beth wants to break out and Noah (another patient turned helper) decides to help her as the two make a plan to escape, but as Beth is in Dawn’s office getting what she needs, she finds Joan has killed herself in the office with a pair of scissors. Before Beth can get out of the office Gorman comes in and tries to rape Beth, but Joan turns into a walker and kills Gorman.
Eventually Beth and Noah escape the hospital and Beth goes on a walker killing spree as Noah gets away, but Beth is caught by one of the cops and is brought back into the prison. Beth now has to answer to Dawn for what happened to Joan, Gorman, Noah and her escape, but Dawn doesn’t want to hear it and responds by beating her. Beth contemplates killing everyone in the hospital to escape, but when she sees Carol being wheeled in she decides to wait.
We like the character of Beth quite a bit, but to be honest we found it difficult watching a whole episode of just Beth. Her character is not strong enough for her own episode and we found that we were not as involved with this story line as we normally are with this show. Also it was distracting to watch a doctor trying to save people, splattering blood everywhere, without a mask (even a makeshift mask) during an epidemic. We get that there’s limited resources but you can find something to cover your mouth in any situation to protect yourself from spreading disease. No one wants to become a walker. Episode grade: C-

it was different, but good.got me hooked up. The thing is, this type of episodes are needed to build strong characters. Carol, Daryl, Michonne all had episodes concentrated on them to make them the characters they are today.. Now we won’t see Beth the same way. Producers ar being smart, and they’ll do the same with Abraham’s group and with Sasha and maybe Tyreese. Anyway, next episode will probably be concentrated on Daryl and Carol only… they can’t forget about the fan favorites right?
