‘Downton Abbey’ season 5, episode 7 preview: What does Michelle Dockery’s Mary want?
So far, “Downton Abbey” season 5 has been one of many questions, but this is probably true more for the Lady Mary character than almost anyone else on the show right now. (Spoilers ahead for Americans!)
When the season started, it seemed at least fairly clear that she wanted something that was very rare for a woman of status at that time: Independence to make the decisions she wanted, in the way that she wanted to make them. This included going on a controversial trip with Lord Gillingham to test out their chemistry, which led to her eventually determining that he was not right for her.
In turn, Mary’s latest scheme has revolved to a certain extent setting him up with his ex, but at the same time, what is with the drastic makeover we saw in the last episode? We don’t think Michelle Dockery’s character fully understands her own feelings just yet, and this is a situation we definitely expect to see come to a head before the Christmas Special airing a little bit later this year comes to a close.
There are ultimately four different paths that are open still for the Mary character, and we can feasibly see her going down any of them: She could end up with Tony, with Charles Blake, with someone completely new, or with no one at all. So long as the moment is earned, we are okay with any of these options.
Where do you think that Mary’s story is going moving into the final episodes of “Downton Abbey” this season? Mary and Tom have the best chemistry, as I have seen where they both have gotten together with their children. It portends an honest relationship I’d like to see it go that way.
