‘Bates Motel’ season 3 spoilers: All about Norman Bates (and who he really is)
Who exactly is Norman Bates? This is a question that “Bates Motel” has really asked itself since the first episode of the show, but now more than ever, it has to take center stage for one simple reason: He is a character torn into two sides.
From one vantage point, you have a guy who probably does want to do good, whether it is at work, with his mother, and through most of his life. However, underneath that is the darkness, and something that he is no longer nearly as confused about. The Miss Watson shockers that came through at the end of season 2 are further proof of that.
So where does the story of the show go from here? Speaking to TVLine in a new interview, executive producer Kerry Ehrin proclaimed that this is going to be “very much about the characters trying to figure out right and wrong, walking through that kind of murky terrain … Norman definitely is getting to a point where he is more torn between two parts of him, and in a lot of ways, it’s about the battle for his soul [and] who he is.”
Hopefully, the A&E series will continue to remix and change up elements from the classic “Psycho” storyline, but the problem that they are most likely going to run into now is how to keep that suspense going when you most likely know how this is going to end. The darker Norman becomes, the closer he is to that terrible horizon.
