‘American Horror Story: Freak Show’ spoilers: Lily Rabe to reprise ‘Asylum’ role
Not too long ago, we wrote about the reveal that Neil Patrick Harris was going to be coming onto “American Horror Story: Freak Show” alongside his husband David Burtka, and this to us qualified (at least in part) as news that we definitely saw coming.
Meanwhile, we would say that the follow definitely qualified as something we didn’t imagine taking place. Per Entertainment Weekly, Lily Rabe is going to return to the FX drama for filming this weekend as Sister Mary Eunice, the character who went from naive nun to demon-possessed soul over the course of the second season “American Horror Story: Asylum.” She will appear in the tenth episode of the series, and will be responsible for transferring another “Asylum” character Pepper to Briarcliff.
From one vantage point, we’re thrilled to see Rabe on the show. Not only that, but this character is our favorite one she played in the first three seasons of the franchise. However, we also find these sort of appearances problematic for a pair of different reasons:
- It was a little weird seeing Mary Eunice turn up here, given that she also knows another character played by Jessica Lange over at the asylum.
- Also, we wonder what this means for Emmy submissions. If this story is not fully self-contained, can you really classify it as a miniseries? We wondered this before Rabe was cast, but we feel this more now than ever before.
Still, we did not expect to see Lily at all on the show before this announcement first came up. She has a new series coming up on ABC, and that will make her having a larger role on the show all the more difficult.
