‘Sons of Anarchy’ season 7, episode 9 preview: Charlie Hunnam, turns in ‘What a Piece of Work is Man’
You probably have known for some time that “Sons of Anarchy” is a series that is loosely inspired off of the William Shakespeare play “Hamlet,” and never has that been more apparent than in the title for next week’s new episode: “What a Piece of Work is Man.” There is a subtle difference between this title and a quote from the plan, at least in that Shakespeare’s version adds the article “A” before “Man.”
For those even more curious, this is a part of Act II, and in a rare moment for Shakespeare, he has Prince Hamlet speak these lines in a monologue that is not his traditional blank verse. We feel like this is yet another moment of self-reflection for the series, as Jax (Charlie Hunnam) not only has to reflect upon his own future, but upon that of the entire club at the moment.
That’s enough Shakespeare analysis for now, and we’ll move on to other matters. For example, “The club deals with internal conflict.” That is the entire synopsis for the episode. Seriously. There is hardly anything that we can take from here when it comes to important story threads.
We do expect there to be something more substantial coming, given how most of tonight’s “The Separation of Crows” seemed to set up Abel’s downfall, Unser starting to piece together information, and Jax looking towards his future. We know that there will also be plenty of time to ponder these things over; the run time for this episode is at 90 minutes once again. (TV Guide has it listed as two hours at first, but the repeat only as an hour and a half.)
