‘Manhattan Love Story’ canceled by ABC, first casualty of fall season
We knew that this was coming, and it was only a matter of time: After a handful of low-rated episodes, ABC decided this week to make “Manhattan Love Story” the first official casualty of the fall season. Its most-recent episode drew just a 0.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic, and was clobbered by “The Flash” (1.4) on The CW. When you get clobbered by the smallest of the major broadcast networks, you’re doing something wrong.
The network is going to shift their Tuesday schedule, and is instead going to run repeats of “Selfie” following new episodes at 8:30 p.m. Eastern time. It’s a wise move to promote a show that is starting to generate buzz, at least over one that has been suffering commercially and critically for a little while now.
We’re not trying to be rude to “Manhattan Love Story” or any of the people who have been working very hard over on the show, but at the same time we are admittedly surprised that the series was picked up in the first place. It’s just not an innovative idea, and as someone who hates narration, we definitely hated there being as much in this show as there was.
So what could be the next show to go? There are some candidates out there. “Utopia” on Fox is a sure-fire dud that will likely leave soon, and we could see “Gracepoint” being sent to Saturday exile before long. Also, “Red Band Society” is still in the danger zone, but the other low ratings on Fox should keep it safe for now.
