‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 11 spoilers: Jessica Capshaw on Arizona, Callie’s future
When we first heard that this week’s new “Grey’s Anatomy” was going to be an enormous one for the Callie – Arizona characters, we wondered just what that would entail. After seeing the episode, though, it’s pretty darn clear that ABC was not kidding.
As of right now, the couple affectionately known as “Calzona” by the fans of the series is officially done, and it comes after a trial separation that showed that despite their best efforts, Callie realized that she didn’t really want to be a part of the relationship anymore. This is clearly devastating for Arizona, who wanted to try and make it work, but it is something that the two are going to live with.
After this breakup happened, there is course one question on the minds of many: Is it possible that we could see a reconciliation here at some point? If there is one bit of advice we could hand out right now, it’d be to not rule anything out. Speaking to TV Guide, Jessica Capshaw says that a reunion is possible at some point, but also makes it clear that it is best to not think that the relationship is anything other than something to be proud of given how long it lasted:
“[Showrunner Shonda Rhimes] knows a lot of things, but then I think that it seems like she also enjoys being able to have a little bit of spontaneity and let an idea come to her. And she’s famously said that she’s 50/50 on Calzona. So we’ll see. I know this is a couple that she’s very invested in. … The thing that I also feel like is worth saying about this couple is, seven years is not a failure. Being together for seven years is a long time, and they’ve done their best, man. They’ve shown up for each other as best as they possibly could, but they’ve been through a lot. Car crashes, plane crashes, babies, going off to Africa, infidelity. I mean, it’s a lot. It’s a lot.”
We don’t necessarily feel like this is a Cristina / Owen situation, where we just have two characters who want very different things and can never really be together. Thanks to that, we’d say that there will always be a chance, but if it happens, it really has to be earned and cannot just feel like fan service to make some out there happy.
