‘Hawaii Five-0’ season 5 episode 5 review: Steve meets a woman from his father’s past

Hawaii Five-0 -All season on “Hawaii Five-0” Danny has been fighting with Marco to get his brother Matt back, and last week Danny got the money together that was required to make the trade for Matt. Danny got Matt back, but it wasn’t in the way he thought (or wanted) – he was dead and stuffed in a barrel. How is Danny going to deal with with the situation now that he knows the truth about his brother?

With the death of Danny’s brother, Steve is thinking more about his father.  He goes to his father’s grave to talk to him about everything that’s happened in the family since he’s been gone, telling him that he wishes that he was there to experience all of the things happening in his life. While at the graveyard Steve sees a young blonde woman put flowers on his father’s grave and tell him that she misses him. Who is this woman? Her name is Ellie and tells Steve that his father was the man that investigated her father’s murder and even though he never found her father’s killer, John stayed in touch on the anniversary of her father’s death.

Steve realizes just how much this case with Ellie meant to his dad and decides to re-open the case and see if he can help close it for him. As the case unfolds Steve learns that his father had a lot of regrets when he sent Steve away when he was younger and wishes he had kept him closer. This is one of the reasons that John put so much energy into Ellie: A father’s guilt can drive a man mad. In the end Steve is able to figure out who killed Ellie’s father (thanks to modern technology) and Ellie finally has some peace.

Bad news about Jerry – turns out not only is he right about the counter-fitting, but the counter-fitters have found out about him and have taken him.

This was a nice transition episode from Danny losing his brother into Steve doing something in the memory of his father. Danny was absent from the episode and we missed him, but after what happened to him last week, we expect that he’s off somewhere getting himself together. Episode grade: B+
